The University of Minnesota, Department of Forest Resources thanks you for your interest in volunteering, especially as someone that will help keep Minnesota’s communities green and livable. Since the program began as a two-year pilot project funded by the USDA Forest Service in 1993, hundreds of people from Minnesota and Western Wisconsin have completed the training. More importantly, in excess of 53,000 documented volunteer hours have been contributed by Minnesota Tree Care Advisors.

Today, the Minnesota (TCA) program continues as a self-sustaining advanced training opportunity for those interested in urban forestry volunteer work, including hundreds of state Master Gardeners. The Core Course training schedule of 30 classroom and laboratory hours typically extends through 5 Saturdays in February and March on the beautiful St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. Upon demand, Core Courses have also been held in Rochester, Saint Peter and Mankato, MN. Update Training classes are offered 6-9 times per year, and cover a particular topic in more depth, usually outdoors or in the lab.

The intent of the program is to develop a network of trained community-based volunteers to assist the University of Minnesota, the state Master Gardener program and county extension offices, and other State agencies and municipalities in promoting urban and community forestry to all residents of Minnesota.
